Welcome to ELFD

In early 1956, a group of men from East Lincoln County decided there was a need for fire protection in their community. They had several meetings at A.O. Duckworth’s store and contacted fire departments in the surrounding counties. In June 1956 the East Lincoln County VFD #1 was formed.

In July, the first volunteer fire engine in the county was bought from Howe Fire manufacturing. It was placed in service in October 1956 and was in service until 1998. In 1958 they contacted the United States Army and received a Dodge power wagon, which was placed in service as the departments first brush unit. It is still in service today!

A lot has changed since those humble beginnings. We at the East Lincoln Fire Department would like to thank those members for their dedication in the early years of the department. Without these brave pioneers, none of this would have been possible.

Since that time, we have grown as the East Lincoln area has grown. Our challenges today include integrating a paid and volunteer force in an effort to provide the best coverage possible to our area. We are here to serve you, if you ever have a question or suggestion, please feel free to contact the East Lincoln Fire Department at 704-472-6234 or via this website.

As the weather turns colder again, we would like to remind you……More than one-third of Americans use fireplaces, wood stoves and other fuel-fired appliances as primary heat sources in their homes. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the fire risks when heating with wood and solid fuels. Heating fires account for 36% of residential home fires in rural areas every year.

Often these fires are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently. We encourage you to practice the following fire safety steps to keep those home fires safely burning. Remember, fire safety is your personal responsibility ...Fire Stops With You!

ELFD Demonstrates Sound Fiscal Practice According to Professional Audit

By Jason Moir & Jason Saine

It would seem natural that the members of the East Lincoln Fire Department demonstrate a keen sense of ability in fighting fires given that is their job, but over the last year it would seem they have had to fight a different kind of fire. The fires they have continually attempted to put out have been those of innuendo and half-truths created by a few critics including local area tabloid The News @ Norman.

The Tribune spent numerous hours this week researching the financial soundness of the East Lincoln Fire Department as well as other fire departments across the county.

North Carolina’s new child restraint law is posted on the shelves of Wal-Mart. Diane Turbyfill / LTN Photo

A new state law requiring children under age 8 or 80 pounds to ride in car seats is causing a rush on area stores — and some confusion for parents.

“They’re waiting for them as we unload them off the truck,” Wal-Mart manager Steve Land said.

Checking the car seat aisle is how Land starts his morning. And that continues throughout the day — making sure the aisle is stocked and orders are made.

Land said he ordered more car seats then he thought the store would need in preparation for when the law took effect. Wal-Mart’s home office also ordered extra seats, but the need is still great.

At approximately 11:55AM today, an accident involving a tractor trailer and a Duke Energy service truck happened on Highway 16 near Dellinger Building Supply. Engine 30 of the East Lincoln Fire Department was one of the first to respond. There were no injuries but the accident snarled traffic for almost an hour.

DENVER, N.C. -- Rescue workers from Mecklenburg and Lincoln counties continue to search Lake Norman for two missing boaters.

Authorities said that Bobby Dennis, 62, and Robert Perkins, 54, both from Denver, were reported missing around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday by a fellow fisherman who was with them.

The search began at the Little Creek access, where their boat was found about 200 yards away from the dock. It has broadened from that area as authorities are still trying to determine what happened to the two men.

Lincoln Times-News

February 5, 2003 - Firefighters from Denver Volunteer Fire Department and East Lincoln Fire Department responded at 11:52 a.m. to a structure fire at 7797 Red Robin Trail. Damage is estimated as "high," since smoke damaged the entire house, said DVFD firefighter and chaplain Matt Gunter (pictured).

Fire Marshal Mike Futrell determined that an iron which had been left on was the cause of the fire. No one was hurt in the blaze. The fire was under control at 12:07 p.m.

News Stories

By Jason Foster Gazette Staff Reporter, The Gaston Gazette

DENVER — Some compared the rush of murky water to high tide at the beach, while others described it as an avalanche of red.

About 3 inches of rainfall fell over 90 minutes Wednesday afternoon, turning the Triangle Crossroads shopping center parking lot into what witnesses described as an ocean of muddy water. Some witnesses reported as much as 3 feet of water in places.

The flooding did not cause any apparent injuries, but left some stores damaged, forcing them to close early for the day.

Kim Moonly was working at The Intelligent Pet Shop when she saw the water rushing toward the store.

"The next think we know, it was coming in the store," said Moonly, 21. "It happened really spontaneous. It was crazy."

Moonly and others at the store used more than two dozen 40-pound bags of dog food to block the flow of water. That left about $600 worth of dog food ruined.
